Who Walked Away with the Pyramid Analytics Steps Challenge?

Who Walked Away with the Pyramid Analytics Steps Challenge?

During the month of November, Pyramid Analytics set out on our first company-wide steps challenge with a focus on getting healthier before the holidays. We had a total of 45 participants from eight countries who completed a survey and logged their daily steps during the month. Although the team prize was part of the contest, participants were motivated to move more, as well as work together as a team to complete bonus challenges.

The winning team as determined by points earned via weekly step count and bonus challenges was The Walking Dev team whose bonus challenge participation secured their win.

Here’s a look at the teams (each consisting of three people) by total step count for the month:

Considering the folks on the winning team are located in Israel, it’s no surprise Israel surpassed all other countries for daily average step count. Romania came in a close second for average daily steps and you can see how the other countries stack up in the graphic below.

Uploading the steps and survey data into BI Office yielded interesting results. As a collective whole, participants walked a total of 9,705,395 steps, which is about the distance from Seattle to London. Our number one stepper clocked in at 392,191 steps for the month, an average of over 13,000 steps per day!

As we dug further into the data, we learned that the most walked day of the month was Saturday, November 5 with 415,359 steps and the least walked day of the month was Tuesday, November 29 at 254,280 steps. Females consistently walked more than males on Saturdays. Any guesses why this may have been a trend?

Looking into different departments of the company, our technology department on average walked more than twice as much as those in human resources, and folks in sales were the next most active.

With so many offices around the globe, the steps challenge encouraged us to connect with colleagues whom we don’t typically interact. Not only did we walk for our health and build camaraderie, the steps challenge also included a philanthropic aspect. Our pledge to donate $10 per steps challenge participant resulted in a $450 donation to the UNICEF Hurricane Matthew relief efforts.

The steps challenge was a fun way for us to examine data from our regular lives through Pyramid Analytics BI Office. Participants of the steps challenge plan to continue the momentum of staying healthy and look forward to competing for the grand prize again next year.
