Power BI can only be deployed on Azure, limiting the available options to customers. PowerBI has different functionality across its on-prem and SaaS versions as well as different capabilities across its desktop and web-based versions.

As per  leading review sites, Power BI customers are struggling to govern analytic content creation and publication processes. Power BI deployments tend to proliferate, making it hard to enforce standard governance practices, especially while scaling up fast.

Our PYRANA is a direct query engine. Every aspect of its query and advanced logic handling works on any SQL-based tech, enabling users to choose one or more data stack options  based on business purpose, scaling requirements or cost.

Power BI uses direct lake mode once data has typically been ingested. To use direct query, users would need to fall back on the desktop app. Direct query in PBI is less performant than Pyramid and limited in terms of calculation complexity and functionality.

Pyramid has the most efficient query shape, being able to create calculations within dimensions (non-metric-based calculations) so that queries resemble the output that users expect.

PowerBI can’t create calculations within dimensions leading to a very inefficient query shape. In one case, with three measures and year and quarter date dimensions, Pyramid only required 3 calculations to deliver, with PowerBI requiring 18 calculations.

Pyramid’s Gen BI capabilities extend through the entire platform. It’s chatbot works directly off any source without the need to ingest data and can answer sophisticated queries in speech or text, along with multi-LLM support.

For Power BI to start working, the data needs to be ingested. It struggles with sophisticated queries and currently only supports OpenAI. While things may change in the future, Pyramid is clearly the more mature and robust option for Generative BI initiatives.
